The Red Bull Global Rallycross racing spectacle converged on Thompson Speedway over the June 3-4 weekend, and thanks to Herb Chambers Honda of Seekonk and their sponsorship, many families were able to snag discounted tickets to the event. The Red Bull teams transformed the Thompson track many race fans are used to into a rallycross course with narrow Jersey barrier slaloms, drifting dirt turns, and of course the high speed jumps.
Adults and kids alike were enthusiastically greeted by the race teams, as all ticket holders were free to roam the paddock, watch the mechanics at work prepping and repairing the cars, and rub elbows with the drivers themselves. Sebastian Eriksson, one of the Honda Red Bull GRC team, signed autographs and eagerly posed for pictures with fans.
The event schedule kept everyone entertained as short sprint-races of 5-6 lap heats alternated between the Supercars and the GRC Lites all afternoon long. The day culminated in a 10-lap final race where fan favorite Tanner Foust once again stood atop the podium when the checkered flag flew.
What makes the Red Bull Global Rallycross unique compared to other series is that they build a one-of-a-kind track at each venue visited over the course of the series. Each track layout also includes “The Joker,” a shortcut in the course, offering another twist in the strategy play for each race, as drivers can only utilize it once during a heat.
The Honda Global Rallycross team currently has three cars and drivers competing, with Mitchell deJong sitting 4th in the overall standings after the New England event. Teams customize factory production models, in this case Honda Civics, resulting in supercars with as much as 600hp that can traverse 70-foot jumps and contact with their competitors.
Whether a racing newbie or a seasoned race veteran, the Red Bull GRC didn’t leave anyone disappointed with the New England stop on the tour. It was wheel-to-wheel action, high speed drifts, and daring passes that fans were able to enjoy up-close and personal to a track mere feet away.
