Herb Chambers Honda of Seekonk is a proud supporter of the PS3 Ronald A. Gill Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit based in Cranston, RI, created in memory of PS3 Ronald A. Gill, Jr. Ronnie was killed in the line of duty on March 25, 2007, when he was working with the Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety and Security Team in Puget Sound.
The foundation provides scholarship for students in Rhode Island and southeastern new England who wish to pursue higher education. Individual awards range from $250 to as much as $4,000. “After Ronnie died, we started getting bills from student loans. Some were forgiven but not all, and it made us realize what a burden these costs are for students and their families. We established the foundation to help kids out and we haven’t turned anyone down yet,” explains Ron Gill, Sr., Ronnie’s father. Soon, the foundation will have raised over $175,000 for scholarships, mostly through their annual motorcycle run and golf tournament.
Ron, Sr. says he talks about Ronnie to someone every day, to keep his story going. Through the foundation, Ronnie’s name and memory continue to live on. Ron, Sr. had a very important reason for wanting to do this: his granddaughter, Gracie. “Gracie was born just a few months after her father died, so I had to be his voice,” he tells us, “his daughter will never meet him, so I need her to be able to look back and say, This is my dad.”
Honda Seekonk would like to invite you to join us in supporting this local group. On Sunday, April 27, 2014, at 10am, the foundation is holding their 6th Annual Ronnie’s Ride Motorcycle Run. The fun begins at Cranston High School West and ends 100 miles later at the Cranston Country Club after passing through locations such as the Rhode Island Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery and Scarborough Beach. The motorcycle run is $25/person, and all proceeds go to the foundation. The foundation holds many events throughout the year, and according to Ron, Sr., every little bit helps to send local kids to college: “Our foundation is built on 5, 10, and 20-dollar bills!”
If you would like to attend the Ronnie’s Ride Motorcycle Run, you can pre-register by contacting Ron Gill, Sr. at:
178 Jordan Avenue
Cranston, RI 02910
Registration will also be open on the day of the race, starting at 8:30am. Hope to see you there!
