One of the
crazy cool things about being a hockey parent is traveling, and I’m sure many sports parents in general will agree that there’s nothing like piling your whole family into your minivan with a giant smelly sports bag and hitting the open road. Seriously, it’s fun!
Recently, my son had a hockey game at Norwich University in Vermont, which we saw as an opportunity for a family weekend up north. We took the still-new-to-us Pilot for its inaugural road trip. We certainly had plenty of snow in Rhode Island, but some other state’s snow is always more interesting and fun, and also, Vermont has mountains, and mountains ROCK.
Saturday found us watching the kids play at Norwich and checking out the local scene in Vermont’s capital, Montpelier.
On Sunday, however, we had some time to ourselves, so we drove over the border into Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College. And that’s where our Honda and its 4-wheel drive really worked its magic.
We went to Occom Pond, where the Dartmouth Outing Club presides over a veritable winter wonderland of ice skating, cross-country skiing, sledding, and marshmallow-roasting. Being hockey parents, we had skates with us, so our kids got to ice skate on an ACTUAL POND for 2 hours.
Afterward, we took our ravenously hungry selves to Lou’s Bakery, a local favorite, and downed a ton of hot chocolate and comfort food.
Then, we got back in the Pilot and headed home to watch the Super Bowl.
We got to see Vermont and New Hampshire in one weekend, and loved every minute of it…where do you like to go when it snows? Comment below with your favorite snowy destination!
