Herb Chambers Honda Seekonk Summer Fun: Our Senior Softball Team!

By 0 Permalink 0

At Herb Chambers Honda Seekonk, we love being involved in our community. Summer offers us a really fun way to do that: our senior softball team! The team, which has been in existence since 1982, plays in the Rhode Island Senior Softball League Division IV. Recently, Honda Mama went over to the Western Hills field in Cranston, RI, to catch a game and see what’s so special about senior softball.

“Really, it’s the competition that makes it fun,” says Ray Brum, who plays infield and outfield positions. (Honda Mama can attest to the competitive edge. There was some big time trash talking out on that field! But everyone shakes hands at the end, nice and sportsmanlike.) Outfielder Jim L’Heureux agreed: “You can go anywhere and shag flies in the outfield, but here, we get to play the game we’ve always played.”  Dennis Paquette, first baseman, added that he’s been playing on the team for 15 years, and “wouldn’t want to miss it.”

The elder statesman of the team, second baseman Peter Monteiro, is 79 years old. The division is 60+, but the league is for 50+, so they let a few young’uns in, too (a couple players are in their late fifties.)   The players all wear “J-8” on their uniforms in honor of the team founder, Jed Schifino, who played well into his eighties. The team was league champion in 2013, has held the division title for two years, and is on track to win again this year.

However, their success has not gone to their head. They are very appreciative of spectators, even signing the game ball to give to their newest fan: Honda Mama’s little girl. (Apparently we were good luck, because they won the game we watched!)

We wish our softball team the best of luck as the season continues…keep up the great work!
