More than 15,000 people turned out for the 30th annual Dominican Festival and Parade of Rhode Island on Sunday, August 13th. Once again, Herb Chambers Honda of Seekonk was pleased to be one of the event sponsors. The festival is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the history and beauty of the Dominican culture.
An event for the Dominican community in Providence
Organized by Quisqueya en Accion, a volunteer non-profit that promotes and preserves Dominican culture, the 2017 theme was “a tribute to diversity.” It included Alex Matos as the festival headliner, who is known for his upbeat salsa music. Prominent local business people and politicians that have supported the Dominican community throughout Providence and Rhode Island served as grand marshals for the parade. These included Gonzalo Cuervo, chief of staff for the Rhode Island Secretary of State; community leaders Betty Bernal, Tomas Avila, Olga Noguera and Jorge Cardenas; and Luis A. Aponte, city council president.
The event commenced with a parade that kicked off from the corners of Thurbers and Broad Street in Providence, and finished at Roger Williams Park. There, the park came to life with all the colors and sounds of the Caribbean. Music, dancing, food, and amazing costumes were enjoyed by all as families filled the park with portable chairs and picnic gear to take it all in.
Herb Chambers Honda Seekonk team helps out!
Our own Natalie Sena, Business Development Manager here at the dealership, helped organize and coordinate our participation at the festival. “We handed out free T-Shirts, free water and icees, and free snacks,” Natalie explained. “I am Dominican and it feels incredible to see the support from our community and the Honda Community.”
Joining Natalie were eight other employees, which included Walter, Eloisa “Elo”, Gisselle “GiGi”, Jonathan “Jon”, Miguel, Raffy, Kelvin, and Henry. We love that our Honda team is such a vibrant and diverse group of people! We were proud to support and participate again in this wonderful event celebrating the Dominican culture found both within our walls and throughout our Rhode Island community.
